Special Education ParaEducation

Assist Special Education Students with disabilities by implementing IEP goals, providing academic support, managing behaviors, and assisting with personal care under special education teacher supervision.

  1. Qualifications:

    1. High school diploma required, some college education preferred.
    2. Valid South Dakota Driver’s License.
    3. Previous experience working with children or youth, in a school setting, with special needs is preferred.
    4. Ability to effectively interact with sensitivity and responsiveness to cultural differences in the client population.
  2. Responsible To: Education Director or Supervisor Assigned

  3. Principal Accountabilities:

    1. Assist with IEP implementation, help execute specific accommodation and modifications outlined in the IEP.
    2. Provide one on one or small group instruction, implement lesson plans, and help design activities appropriate for students on IEPs.
    3. Implement behavioral intervention plans, provide positive reinforcement and assist in crisis management or de-escalation in accordance with IEP goals.
    4. Accurate data collection and recording of academic and behavioral IEP goals, reporting observations to special education teacher.
    5. Prepare materials needed for activities and lesson planned.
    6. Maintain thorough and timely documentation of significant incidents.
    7. Assist teacher in development and implementation of lesson plans, assist with independent work, projects and lead small group and individual instruction.
    8. Serve as substitute for absent teachers, if necessary.
    9. Respond to other expectations of the Agency and/or Supervisors.
